CADENCE MAGAZINE/USA- may 2007 – Phillip McNally

“FELICE CLEMENTE QUARTET, “”PERFECT WORLD””, PICANTO RECORD 2006. F.Clemente, D.Grissett, V.Della Fonte, G.Hutchinson.Italian saxophonist Felice Clemente plays nice mainstream Jazz, and on he’s backed by a trio of consummate professionals. They work out mostly on Clemente’s own compositions, which are pretty and tuneful. On tenor i hear a lot of Dexter Gordon in his playing, but on soprano he is more distinctive. His soprano work is an extension of his mainstream approach, and it points out how few musicians play this way on the little horn. Perhaps because of Lacy and Coltrane, soprano has taken on free Jazz heritage, or players use it to hearken back to Bechet. Not many are playing Dexter and Lester on the soprano, but Clemente has it down. He has a great melodic sense with very solid swing. Still his work is deeply about the flowing pretty melody of his solos. He always tells a story. The trio behind him is tasteful, taking the occasional solo, but mostly giving Clemente a smooth cushion for his richly melodic improvisations. This is not groundbreaking, but it is well-played, passionate Jazz.”
