FELICE CLEMENTE QUARTET – “NUVOLE DI CARTA” – Crocevia di Suoni Records.
Saxophonist Felice Clemente leads a strong Bebop 4tet throught a set of all originals with one tune based on a melody from Rimsky-Korsakov. Clemente is not a player with the bite and energy of Rollins, but with the more cerebral edge of Wayne Shorter. Like Shorter, he sounds as natural on soprano as on his tenor work which tends toward the higher range of that instrument. The trio behind him swings easily, and gives him lots of room to explore. The are times, as on the duo with bassist Corini, when Clemente shows a bit more fire, and reminds me some of Joe Henderson. All in all, a solid straight ahead date, accomplished and swinging. And as with all three of these, the melodic invention is the music’s real delight._Phillip McNally.
